    Notes
    • Elisa was born in St. Francis, NB Canada, the ninth generation on this continent, the eighth child of Mathias and Susanne (Nadeau) Thibodeau. Her ancestor, Pierre Thibodeau arrived in Acadia in 1654 from France. At the time of the grand derangement, her ancestors came to the St. John's river valley.

Elisa was five years old when the family crossed the river St. John by canoe to St. Francis Maine in the United States. Her father Mathias farmed during the summers and was a woodsman winters when he would spend the entire season in the forest. Elisa and her sisters and younger brothers were delegated to feed the animals and do the barn chores. In addition to this washer indoor work of cooking, fetching water, cleaning and doing laundry, while her mother spun yarn and wove clothing and blankets.

Her first years in an American school which taught English were her most rigorous as she had to absorb the language while learning the courses given. When she was twelve, she began to hire out as an au pair and housekeeper. She started at three dollars a week.

She married Henry Stanislaus Sylvain on December 26, 1922 in Van Buren Maine at the age of sixteen. The two had seven children and moved frequently to wherever Henry could find work. In 1939, Henry found a job in Winslow Maine where he remained until retirement.

Elisa was diligent in teaching her children French/Canadian traditions, encouraging the language, presenting handed down rituals and relating family histories. Elisa survived her husband of sixty-two years, leaving this world at the age of ninety-two.
